There isn’t a much better time of year to be opening a new ice cream shop in Bedford Township.
And the new shop, billed to feature both delectable ‘eats and treats’ is practically ready-made for success, as part of one of the area’s already proven winners!
Sand Shack Eats & Treats at Forest View, which is located at 2345 West Dean Rd. in Temperance, is owned by Rich Kenny. The new ‘cool’ spot in town started serving its treats in April with a soft opening. An official grand opening is planned soon and there will be new menu items added, too.
“…We’re currently in a soft opening phase as we get up to speed. We will have an official grand opening in a few weeks, when we get the new food options added,” Kenny, who also owns Forest View Lanes and Quimby’s told the Bedford Press.
This isn’t the first time Forest View has had an ice cream shop, Kenny noted, but you have to go back almost three decades to have gone there for the frozen treat.
“Forest View actually had an ice cream shop back in 1987 when I first started working here. I was 14 years old and worked in that shop when we had miniature golf on site as well,” Kenny said, noting that “bringing back an ice cream experience felt like a fun way to reconnect with that history and create something nostalgic for the community.”
Kenny said that right now, the Sand Shack is open daily for ice cream, and over the next month they will be expanding the menu to include some food that should give TexMex fans something to get excited about.
“We’re planning to introduce a Mexican/Southwest-inspired theme along with items like loaded hot dogs, popcorn, pretzels, and more,” he said.
Response to the Sand Shack has been extremely positive, Kenny said. In addition to a dedication to great customer service and great food, the owner and his employees have come up with some giveaways to attract business, and the awesome-tasting treats that bring the guests back for more.
“The community has been very supportive. We kicked things off last week by giving away free ice cream cones and cups, and the turnout was fantastic,” Kenny said, adding that “now that we’re moving past the initial launch, we’re getting fully up to speed with our menu and operations.”
One of the things that makes Sand Shack stand out over other ice cream shops is the unique infused flavors it has the ability to serve.
“We offer classic vanilla, chocolate, and twist soft serve, but what makes us unique is our ability to infuse flavors into the vanilla. Guests can choose from eight infusion flavors, including bubblegum, strawberry, orange, blueberry (“blue goo”), chocolate, butter pecan, green apple, and butterscotch,” he said, adding that we also offer twisters, shakes, and sundaes. One fun option that families enjoy is our ice cream cups or cones topped with a dog bone treat.
Ice cream is available daily from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., but Kenny said they will expand hours soon.
Inside Forest View, their full food menu is available until 10 p.m. or later. They are open until 11 p.m. or later. They open at 8 a.m. Friday through Sunday and 9 a.m. during the week for breakfast, bowling, and full restaurant/bar service.
“We’ve recently expanded our breakfast menu with new items like breakfast pizzas & burritos, waffles, and French toast, along with traditional favorites such as omelets, scramble bowls, pancakes, breakfast sandwiches, and more,” he said. Coming soon are those new menu items Kenny mentioned earlier in this story. And it’s not
just an item being added here or there, it’s practically an entirely separate menu that is sure to please area residents with its extremely diverse options.
“We’re adding new food options primarily at Forest View,” he said.
Some of the new menu items include:
Chipotle Pineapple Chicken BBQ Hawaiian Pizza Blackened Shrimp Salad Hot Honey Chicken Wrap Hoagie Slider Sub Chicken Avocado Wrap Blackened Shrimp Alfredo Stromboli Bang Bang Shrimp Hummus and Chicken Plate Gyros Corned Beef and Turkey Reubens Turkey Club Sub Steak Burrito Carne Asada Tacos Prime Rib Panini
Equally as popular as its bowling lanes and food is the beach volleyball at Forest View.
“Beach volleyball has been a huge hit,” Kenny said, adding that “we currently run leagues five nights a week and offer open play daily. We are also going to start weekend tournaments for volleyball for the fun and serious players. It’s a great spot for groups of friends to come out and be active. We are now forming our youth volleyball is on Monday and Tuesday when school lets out – sign up today. We’re starting another eight-week volleyball league in mid-May, and our summer volleyball leagues kick off after the Fourth of July.”
With so many different activities going on in one area, the parking lot might be full, but that doesn’t necessarily signal a busy restaurant, bowling lanes or ice cream shop.
“One thing I always tell people—don’t let a full parking lot scare you away. Most of the crowd is outside playing volleyball, so there’s usually plenty of space inside the restaurant, on the patio, or in the bowling center. We have some restaurant-only parking spots up by the restaurant, too. We are going to add some parking spots for the ice cream area too, and we are going to add a QR code order option from the parking spaces and we can bring ice cream out to you,” Kenny said, adding, that we’ve also added a variety of outdoor games you won’t find just anywhere, including outdoor pool tables, foosball, table tennis, ladder ball, giant Connect Four, cornhole, and fowling.”
For those wondering about Quimby’s, it remains, albeit in a limited form. Due to an unexpected water pipe break in late January, Quimby’s Food & Spirits is temporarily closed while repairs are completed.

Sand Shack Eats & Treats by Forest View, 2345 West Dean Rd., Temperance, is open and ready for your business!
“Right now, we’re offering a large selection of Quimby’s menu items at Forest View, and all of our Quimby’s team members are working at Forest View now,” Kenny said, adding that “as for reopening Quimby’s, we’re still waiting on next steps from the landlord. No significant repair work has started yet, so realistically it will be several months before we’re able to reopen or longer.”
Same tea. Same food. Same hospitality that Kenny and his staff have trademarked for years. That never changes despite the challenges and changes that sometimes occur.
Speaking of year-long, Kenny said he is looking forward to what summer will bring.
“We’re creating a place where you can simply hang out, play and relax. From outdoor games to our firepit area, Forest View is designed to be a destination that people enjoy even beyond dining,” Kenny said.
“This summer is definitely an exciting time for us. We offer short-season bowling leagues (8–12 weeks), youth ‘learn to bowl’ programs, adult/youth leagues, and fun social leagues throughout the summer. Our traditional leagues continue in the fall and winter,” Kenny said, adding that “this summer, we’re also adding a large 100-by-30- foot outdoor play area for kids, along with plans for a future dog park space.”
